A Machine Gun Battalion was attached to each Infantry Division and was formed of four MG Companies.

The 4th Bn, MGC was formed on the 26 February 1918.

As a unit of the 4th Infantry Division, it will have taken part in the following battles and engagements.

On the 11th November the 4th Division, in XXII. Corps Reserve, was concentrated in the south-east of Valenciennes. The division did not proceed to the Rhine as part of the Army of Occupation, but it moved to Valenciennes, and here, on the 4th December, it was visited by H.M. the King. On the 6th January, 1919, the division moved to the Binche-la Louviere area, and demobilisation was carried out.
