A Machine Gun Company was attached to each Infantry Brigade and their subsequent Division, an additional Company was attached as a divisional reserve.

The 205th M.G. Coy. was formed on the 19 March 1917.
On 26 April 1918, it was amalgamated with the 13th, 15th and 95th Machine Gun Companies to form No. 5 Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
As a unit of the 5th Infantry Division, it will have taken part in the following battles and engagements.

| On the 23rd November the division was warned that it would be moved to Italy. Entrainment began on the 27th November, and concentration was completed by the 20th December to the east of the R. Brenta and not far from Padua. The division formed part of the XI. Corps. | |

| The 5th Division took over the line along the Piave on the 27th January, and held it until relieved on the 18th March. On the 24th, the division was warned that it would return to France. Entrainment began on the 1st April, and concentration was completed on the 9th April between Doullens and Frevent. | |
